What Are Tutorials?These tutorials are short lessions designed to help you make your Web site easier to use, get better search engine placement, and give your site a more professional look and feel.The tutorials cover a variety of topic areas and will be expanded from time to time. If there is an area you would like covered, just let us know.
Meta TagsMeta Tags can be a huge help in getting higher search engine placement for your Web site. Meta tags are not displayed when you page is rendered but they are there to be seen if you look at the source code.There are a variety of Meta Tags but the two most important for our purposes are the description and key words tags. This tutorial was prepared by Jason Baley, our resident graphics magician and search engine guru.
The Care and Feeding of Random WidgetsOne of the major features of a Rapid Web Site system is what we call "Random Widgets." A widget can be just about anything. The standard RWS set up display an inspirational saying at the bottom of the home page. Reload the page and you have another saying.Several categories of widgets are also included with the standard RWS installation. These include groupings of humorous tid bits and Webmaster tips. The best part is the ability to create your own random widgets. If you're an accounts you might want to do tax tips. This tutorial explains how to get the most out of your widgets.
The Dastardly "File Not Found" PageWe've all seen them and many of us have caused them, the 404 page not found error. These are caused by a link pointing to a non-existing page. The worse part is the standard default page, it doesn't give the viewer a clue as to what happened or what to do and doesn't even tell the Webmaster something is wrong.Our custom 404 error page, which is free to RWS users, changes all of that. Upon encountering a 404 error, a nicely formatted page is displayed complete with search capabilities. In addition, the Webmaster is emailed a message advising of the transgression. This tutorial will also tell you how to set up a 404 error page if you're foolish enough not to be using RWS.
Kick Start Your Marketing EffortsIf you have been diligent in promoting your web site youve done the obvious things such as adding your URL to your business cards, advertisements, and all correspondence. Repeat site visitation is encouraged by frequently adding new content and updating existing material.You have also submitted your site to a large variety of search engines and meticulously tweaked your meta tags to enhance search engine placement. However, all of these things are reactive: You depend upon the user to come and visit, or revisit, your web site. Lets get proactive. A mailing list may be just what to doctor ordered to kick start your markeing efforts. This tutorial explains the various types of mailing lists and how to use them on your site.
